The federal government is set to roll out a pay-per-mile road tax for petrol vehicles after a trial with electric vehicles. The system will record distance driven through odometer readings or telematics. It launches in April 2028. The Treasury has suggested staged annual checks to replace live tracking to ease privacy concerns. The policy takes cues from the discontinued paper tax disc system.
