Renowned artist Yayoi Kusama has died. She held her paintbrushes until right before she died. She experienced hallucinations as a young child. Kusama transformed those childhood hallucinations into famous art. Polka dots served as her main motif. They were featured in her many paintings and sculptures.
Kusama won the Praemium Imperiale award for her contributions in art. Her work gained global fame. One creation, the Red Pumpkin artwork, grew into an icon of Naoshima island. She remained active until her death. She created art rooted in her early childhood experiences and her signature polka dots.
